Religious Sites Open Doors Statewide on May 21 & 22 - Happy 25th Anniversary, Sacred Sites Program!

Mark your calendars! On 5/21 & 5/22, YOU are invited to tour numerous religious institutions, as part of The NY Landmarks Conservancy's State-wide Open House Weekend.  

Religious institutions which received Sacred Site grants &/or Lucy G Moses Preservation Awards for their restoration, will participate. The Sacred Sites Program is having a 25th Anniversary celebration, so what better way to celebrate with the public, who has played a major role in the process for a quarter of a century?!?!

  1. The First Presbyterian Church of Newtown will hold its Sacred Sites Open House Saturday, May 18 from 11:00 - 4:00. At 11:30 & 2:30 there will be talks on its 361 years of history in the Elmhurst area and the architecture of its present buildings, dating from 1895. They will be followed by a short tour of present & former church buildings & sites. Some early history of the area will be included. On display will be recently restored 1895 doors, original documents back to 1715 & photos to 1880s. Plus information on the church today. All are invited.

  2. The First Presbyterian Church of Newtown, having an Open House May 18 11-4,is on the corner of Queens Blvd. & 54th Ave., across from Target. Take R or M subway to Grand Ave./Newtown; there is an exit in front of the church at the eastern end. Take the left stairway to the street. Also Q59 & Q60 buses stop at Queens Blvd.& Grand Ave., a block away. Talks on history & architecture at 11:30 & 2:30, followed by a tour of present buildings & prior sites.
